We’re not like other schools.

One of the high school students I work with asked me the other day why we don’t do advisory first thing in the morning like other schools. My answer was simply, “We are not like other schools.” She thought about this for a minute then said she understood that, but “why not during A Block?” I explained it gave everyone time to get to school, have something to eat, settle in, and be ready for what can be challenging work during advisory.

While the method often involves a game or engaging activity, the ideas and lessons could be difficult to come right to. Whether it is playing a ridiculous version of 10zi or debating if an image is a tool or a toy, improved social skills is the desired outcome. A general set of 6 rules keeps all the groups on the same page and allows members to interchange without major issues. The appropriate exchange of ideas, challenging other’s way of thinking, and sticking up for your truth are all encouraged. Not just in advisory, but throughout the day.

So whether you’re looking for the key under the doormat your standing on or making 26 unique patterns for squares. remember it’s okay to be different.

And tomorrow, we build and race cardboard sleds!
