Zebras have feathers and hatch from coconuts…

Not really, but the conversation develops connection.

If you have been following the social media, you will know that the Newport Montessori came to spend some out of school time with us this week. The students engaged in various activities based on their age. A core belief for me is that the connection allows for deeper challenge of the students. One young learner and I talked about a turkey feather and how it came from a zebra and later added that zebras hatch from coconuts! This wild conversation grew to include several students, and as they were challenged by different things we did, the connection was there. For a laugh. For encouragement. Or just to let them know I was still there.

As the day progressed different groups worked through challenges and of course some play. Teachers joined in and participated in a variety of ways; from belaying to climbing and balancing to supporting students, everyone filled a role.

The slack line, Moby deck and rope bridge were big hits with the younger students!

It was a great day of watching relationships and social interactions shift and develop as the challenges arose for each group. Older students were excited to try the vertical play pen, some times in pairs, sometimes alone. When not climbing, they belayed together even supporting teachers as they climbed!
